Ten Things To Do Within 1 Hour of Perth
  1. Only a 25 minute ferry ride from the shore, Rottnest Island has gorgeous beaches and activities for the whole family, making it one of Western Australia's premier tourist destinations. It is a haven for wildlife of all sorts, and is home to the infamous quokka, a marsupial unique to the island. The underwater life is just as impressive, and snorkelling is popular here.
  2. Cottesloe Beach is the perfect example of Perth's expansive white beaches, and also offers decent snorkelling. A steady swell makes it popular amongst surfers, and the soft sands are perfect for sunbasking and beach games. Cool off afterwards with a beer in the landmark Cottesloe Beach Hotel.
  3. A ninety minute drive from the city lies Boshack Farm, a 250 acre eco environment where you can enjoy an outback adventure experience! There are large ponds, four natural springs and plenty of Australian wildlife. All size groups are catered towards on their one day tour, which gives educational insights into the outback, pioneers, and Aboriginal Australia.
  4. Mundaring Weir lies in the Helena River Valley, and its smooth water is complemented by rolling lawns and natural bushland. Water is pumped from here to local farming areas and the Kalgoorlie goldfields. The Mundaring Weir Hotel is over 100 years old, and is an important icon of the region. It is a popular weekend retreat for city dwellers.
  5. Fremantle's beautiful architecture is not to be missed, nor are it's vibrant markets and historic prison. The relaxed cafe atmosphere of the town is also an attraction. On a stroll through the streets you will pass many heritage buildings and encounter plenty of buskers, who are add to the cultural feel of Fremantle.
  6. Head to the Darling Ranges and relax by the shores of Lake Leschenaultia. Hire canoes, barbeque by the beach or take an easy and pleasant walk to look for some wildflowers. Surrounded by 9 acres of tranquil bushland, and adjoined by state bushalnd, there is modern accommodation available here if you want to extend your stay.
  7. The Kings Park and Botanic Gardens are close to the CBD, and offer respite from the citys hustle and bustle. Cultivated gardens and recreational areas mix with natural bushland. Many events are held in the gardens, especially during the summer when the days are long and the nights short. Enjoy outdoor theatre, concerts and botanical workshops.
  8. The Swan Valley is half an hour from perth, and offers amazing views that can be seen from foot, horseback or car. This is the oldest wine growing region in WA, and the premier food and wine destination in the state. Take your picnic basket and stock up on some fresh produce, and stop in at the numerous cellar doors to sample the local drops.
  9. Visit the Bells Rapids in the Swan valley, home to the Avon Descent White Water Race. While not recommended for swimming, the scenery of the area is stunning and there are many nature walks by the river. Its a great spot for a picnic, followed up by a bushwalk taking in the scenery of the region.
  10. If you are feeling adventurous then head to the limestone beauty of Ngilgi cave for a true underground experience. Adventure Tours will take you into the darker regions of this beautiful cave, and Torchlight Tours provide the thrill of caving in a safe environment. There is a 'Caves Cafe', where breakfast and light lunches are served.
