Ten Things To Do In The Clare Valley
- A visit to the oldest winery in the region, Sevenhill Cellars, is essential. It is run
by Jesuit priests, who initially established the winery to make sacramental wine for
their services.
- Copper mining used to be big industry in this region, and many of the towns show
evidence of this. Visit Burra and see the heritage buildings and visit the museum that
celebrates the mining era.
- An authentic 19th Century Georgian mansion, Martindale Hall is a grand and
elaborate old set up that has to be seen to be believed. It is open as a heritage
museum everyday, and accommodation can also be organised there.
- To appreciate the beauty of the valley and get some exercise at the same time,
go for a walk or a cycle on the Riesling Trail. It follows an old rail track, and explores
the vineyards and rolling hills.
- For something different experience the Mintaro Maze, a maze of actual living
plants and hedges that includes twists, turns and dead ends that will trick the most
committed explorer!
- Indulge in some local art with a visit to the Murray Edwards Corella Hill Studio.
Set on a ridgetop with overlooking the vineyeards of the valley, the views here are as
impressive as the art on display.
- A horticultural wonder, the Timandra Garden in Mintaro is a relaxing place to
spend a morning. The enormous variety of plants are all sustainable and hardy, making
this garden very drought friendly.
- The Old Police Station Museum is a quaint building nestled in the hills, and
housing a large collection of artefacts. Its photography collection is particularaly
impressive.
- The town of Kapunda is often referred to as the best kept secret of the valley. Its
grand stone buildings hint at its rich history, and it has maintained a culture rich in arts
and crafts.
- A visit to Tim Gramp Wines will educate you on the process of wine making. It is a
fine introduction to the family run and very hospitable cellar doors of the Clare Valley.
