Ten Things To Do Close To Dubbo
- Dubbo is best known as being home to the Western Plains Zoo, a zoo where
animals from all over the globe are kept in large enclosures remarkably like their
natural habitat.
- The Macquarie River runs through Dubbo, and is perfect for sunset cruises. Its
abundance of fish means angling is one of the chief pursuits in this town.
- Dundullimal Homestead is a timber slab building that has been standing since
the 1840's. Enjoy the old style atmosphere of the homestead and the farm its built
on.
- It would be a crime not to call in at the Old Dubbo Gaol! Displays throughout
the gaol document prison life over the last two centuries, and there are lots of
stories about old criminals housed here.
- The Dubbo Observatory is a great way to get up close to the celestial planets.
Go star gazing, find out what the moons surface really looks like and discover the
Milky Way.
- The Macquarie Valley is fertile and lush, and there are lots of pleasant drives
you can take here. Visit wineries and farms and sample some of the local produce.

- The Tubbagah People have made 150 rock carvings at the Terramungamine
Rock Carvings. This ancient rock site is historically significant and is in a scenic
setting by the Macquarie River.
- For some fine examples of aboriginal art and an insight into indigenous culture
visit the Western Plains Cultural Centre. This modern museum also has engaging
exhibitions on Australian settlement.
- Just outside of town is the Dubbo Military Museum, which houses one of the
largest privately owned collections of military memorabilia in the country. There are
other attractions here like a mini golf course.
- Jedda Boomerangs is a kids playground where they make boomerangs and
can also teach you how to throw one and how to play a didgeridoo.
