Ten Things To Do Close To Emerald
- Fairbairn Dam is a great place to spend a weekend. Enjoy lounging your days
away on or next to the water, and feast on the red claw crayfish the dam is famous
for.
- You can't miss the worlds largest Van Gogh painting, which stands proudly in
the Emerald town centre. Standing at over 25 metres high, over 13 tonnes of steel
were used in its production.
- The perfect tropical paradise for an afternoons stroll or a relaxing morning, the
Emerald Botanic Gardens also provide an opportunity to gain an insight into the
natural environment of the region.
- In Morton Park lies the Emerald Centenerary of Federation Mosaic Pathway,
which depicts 100 years of Emerald's history with 21 intricate designs of tiles, created
by ten local artists.
- A heritage listed building, the Emerald Historic Railway Station is over a century
old. It has an elaborate entry with wrought iron lacework and pillared portico, which is
great for those kodak moments.
- Another icon of Emerald is the fossilised tree situated outside town hall. Over 250 million years old, it was discovered in 1979 when a new railway bridge was being built.
- With most of the early Emerald buildings being destroyed by fire, the Pioneer Cottage Complex is unique in that it houses one of the first cottages built in the town. There is also a Communications Museum on site.
- Driving south will get you to Carnarvon Gorge National Park, which features towering sandstone cliffs and vibrantly coloured gorge sides. Aboriginal rock paintings adorn the walls in many places.
- Fishing is a favourite past time of locals and visitors. Lake Maraboon and Fairbairn Dam are favourites for this, and are well stocked with barramundi. There are other rivers in the region too.
- The region around the town is largely supported by agricultural activities. Why not go for a homestay on one of the farms, learn about the industry and experience true country hospitality?
